Out of a competitive pool of over 100 creative and innovative ideas coming from various private sector companies world-wide, a total of six awardees have been selected (to-date) from two different financing windows to implement their innovative renewable energy ideas within the refugee-hosting areas of Uganda and Kenya.

Every April 22nd, stakeholders of all backgrounds come together to advance sustainability and climate action in commemoration of Earth Day. As one of the largest energy access programmes in the world, EnDev is contributing to the protection of ecosystems by, for example, replacing usage of non-renewable biomass and fossil fuels with renewable energy.

Entrepreneurs are a cornerstone of an economically viable and sustainable mini-grid – they increase the demand for electricity while boosting the local economy. This was the rationale for EnDev Rwanda’s Productive Use of Energy intervention at existing mini-grid sites, which were struggling with too little demand for electricity.

EnDev supports the development of a national plan for solar photovoltaic (PV) electronic waste (“e-waste”) management in Benin. To this end, EnDev implements pilot projects for collecting and recycling solar PV e-waste, thanks to EU co-financing. The aim is to effectively engage and reinforce the private sector to develop the PV e-waste value chain.

A grantee under the Smart Communities Coalition Innovation Fund funded by USAID and implemented by EnDev, has successfully completed its pilot to provide safe drinking water in refugee settlements.

The African Biodigester Component (ABC), one of EnDev’s associated projects, commissioned a study showing that 82% of the domestic biodigesters installed in Kenya are functional. As the project wants to reach an ambitious quota of 90%, the study provides valuable insights and perspectives on the issue of functionality.
