{"id":20833,"date":"2025-09-19T11:13:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T09:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/endev.info\/?post_type=impact_story&#038;p=20833"},"modified":"2026-02-04T15:30:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:30:40","slug":"custodians-of-bolivias-lady-bees-indigenous-women-turn-honey-into-empowerment","status":"publish","type":"impact_story","link":"https:\/\/endev.info\/fr\/impact-stories\/custodians-of-bolivias-lady-bees-indigenous-women-turn-honey-into-empowerment\/","title":{"rendered":"Custodians of Bolivia\u2019s lady bees: Indigenous women turn honey into empowerment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"section section--align-left\">\n\t<div class=\"block block--content-width\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"intro-font-size\">In Bolivia\u2019s Chuquisaca region, Indigenous women are transforming their role as custodians of the \u201cLady Bees\u201d into thriving enterprises \u2014boosting their income, strengthening their communities, and gaining recognition as entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"section section--align-full\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"block\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"content-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Bee-4-e1758273120460.png\" alt=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If there\u2019s one thing that exemplifies the connection that Indigenous women in Bolivia have with the land, it\u2019s their alliance with the <em>melipona<\/em>, the native stingless bees of Chuquisaca. \u201cIt interests me, it\u2019s very beautiful \u2026 it\u2019s a passion to work with the <em>melipona<\/em>,\u201d says Ebelin Ortega of the Santa Rosa community.<\/p>\n<p>For generations, Indigenous women like Ebelin have farmed and harvested honey from the bees, known locally as \u201cLa Se\u00f1orita\u201d. In supporting these pollinators of wild flora, they have played an integral role in sustaining the complex ecological tapestry of Serran\u00eda del I\u00f1ao National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area. The stingless bees are not as productive as honeybees, but the honey they make is prized for its antibiotic and healing qualities. They also symbolise fertility and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>From bee guardians to eco-entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"section section--align-full\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"block\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group block-text-image__group--order-2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"content-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Bee-2-e1758271653565.png\" alt=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group block-text-image__group--order-1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Now, the women of Chuquisaca have another ally in their role as custodians of biodiversity and tradition. With support from EnDev Bolivia\u2019s Women\u2019s Energy Fund (Fondo de Energia de Mujer, FEM) practitioners of meliponiculture are learning how to run a business. In a country where half the small- and medium-sized enterprises fail in their first 3 years, FEM\u2019s initiative is making a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous women entrepreneurs, in particular, are constrained on multiple fronts. Many set up businesses out of necessity rather than planning, and are poorly placed to access information, value chains, and innovative technologies. In response, FEM promoted Productive Use of Energy (PUE) for indigenous women cooperative\u2019s interested in meliponiculture and other production chains. With the assistance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pasosbolivia.org\/\">PASOS Foundation<\/a>, the selected cooperatives trained their members on rural business management as well as technology operation and management. FEM also supported the groups in adapting machinery, for example, a solar-powered electric honey pump for the beekeepers, to their needs.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"section section--align-wide section--no-top section--no-bottom section--no-padding\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"btn btn--quartery\" href=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/best-practice\/from-llamas-to-shampoo-and-bees-how-women-energised-rural-businesses\/\" >In Bolivia, FEM sparked a wave of innovation. Read here what happens when rural women design their own energy solutions. <\/a>\n\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Changing perceptions, inside and out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"section section--align-full\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"block\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"content-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EnDev_Imkerin-1-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The results have been impressive. Using a solar-powered electric honey pump instead of a knife means the pot-like structures in which the \u201cse\u00f1orita\u201d bees produce honey don\u2019t need to be destroyed, and the honey doesn\u2019t need to be put through a strainer. This has reduced the time to harvest a kilo of honey from almost four hours to less than an hour \u2013 an astonishing boost in productivity of over 400%.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, strengthening women\u2019s entrepreneurship has had gender-transformative impacts. \u201cWe are very happy with this project\u201d, says Ana Vivanco, a leader from the La Tapera community in the <em>Chuquisaca region<\/em>. \u201cAs women, we have made progress, we are more united, and not only is this unity of women visible here, but also the enthusiasm they have for working with native bees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Meet Ebelin Ortega and Edith Martin\u00e9z in the video:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"oembed-component\" data-module=\"lazyVideo\" data-type=\"youtube\" data-embed=\"iV1-ZvDvFMM\" data-cookieconsent=\"marketing\"><iframe title=\"240 women from the Chuquisaca Chaco innovate in the use of electric pumps for honey harvesting\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iV1-ZvDvFMM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its launch in 2021, FEM has been able to support 29 rural enterprises across diverse production chains such as Amazonian fruits, textiles, Andean grains, health and personal care, milk, baking, recycling, honey, coffee, vegetables and <a>camelids<\/a>. These employ 1,350 individuals, the majority of whom are women. But beyond profits, according to Edith Mart\u00ednez of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pasosbolivia.org\/\">PASOS Foundation<\/a>, the beekeeping initiative succeeded in \u201cbringing together 240 women \u2026 and now the women are leaders.
