For Emmanuel, the cow is more than livestock; it symbolizes how far he and his community have come. Once unsure how to feed his family, he now earns income from multiple sources: pig farming, land cultivation\u2014and producing improved cookstoves (ICS).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"section section--align-full\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"block\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group block-text-image__group--order-2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"content-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_2697-768x513.jpeg\" alt=\"Jo\u00ebl feeds his cow called Ya EnDev.\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption>Jo\u00ebl feeds his cow called Ya EnDev &#8211; named after the EnDev programme. \u00a9AVSI Foundation<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group block-text-image__group--order-1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As a member of the Batwa, Burundi\u2019s historically marginalised Indigenous community, Emmanuel Ndayizigiye * (name changed to protect identity) grew up learning the traditional craft of clay pottery. But the demand for handmade pots declined as cheaper tin alternatives took over. \u201cTen pots were worth three kilograms of beans,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was hard for us to feed our families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without steady income, access to healthcare and education remained out of reach. Emmanuel also felt the sting of social discrimination that has followed the Batwa for generations, with many people not accepting them as fellow citizens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Old skills for new opportunities<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"section section--align-full\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"block\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"content-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_2618-768x513.jpeg\" alt=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption>The BIKIIGITI is an improved clay cookstove model adapted from the Matawi stove used in Tanzania. With support from EnDev, through its lead implementer AVSI Foundation, the cooperative received training and technical assistance to repurpose the members\u2019 clay-working skills to make improved cookstoves. \u201cThe Batwa are good at making improved cookstoves because they know how to work with clay,\u201d Emmanuel explains.<\/p>\n<p>Their new stove model, the <em>BIIKIGITI<\/em>, uses less charcoal, produces less smoke, and lasts longer than traditional stoves. But EnDev recognised that the challenges that the Batwa face go beyond income. The project also supported access to financial services, healthcare, and education, while encouraging new income sources. Thanks to savings from stove sales, members of the <em>Kazoza mu bacu <\/em>cooperative now raise pigs and rent farmland\u2014 which they had previously struggled to access.
