Where once she may have remained silent, Khadija is now a respected voice. Through the success of her thriving improved cookstove business, she now speaks with confidence, making key decisions for her family.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Evolving an artisanal skill<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"section section--align-full\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"block\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"content-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endev.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/O5A9304-scaled-e1758203690379-768x563.jpeg\" alt=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption>After airing advertisements in the radio, the demand for Khadija&rsquo;s improved stoves has increased significantly. She sells them predomintatly to women in rural areas.  <\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__group \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"block-text-image__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>200 km west of Dar es Salaam in Morogoro District, Tanzania, Khadija grew up learning how to craft traditional clay stoves from her mother. \u201cAfter I mastered it, I decided to advance by learning more about other types of stoves,\u201d Khadija explains. She was inspired by local stove producers working with the EnDev programme, implemented in Tanzania by the Dutch NGO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snv.org\/\">SNV<\/a>. They encouraged her to join in November 2020. Since then, she\u2019s transformed her craft into a growing business: \u201cMy goal was to learn how to make improved stoves. Then, I could help myself and assist other women in this business, so that we could generate our own income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The training provided by EnDev also included business management and customer service. EnDev also supported Khadija to start radio advertising, which helped her reach more potential customers, especially in rural areas. After the advertisements aired, the demand for the improved stoves increased. However, as Khadija shared the benefits \u2013 reduced fuel consumption, improved indoor air quality, and time savings \u2013 her customers began to make the shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were also some issues at home: \u201cWhen I started the business, I faced some challenges from my family, particularly from my spouse. He didn&rsquo;t initially believe in the stove business.\u201d Now seeing the success, Khadija and her husband are working as a team, both at home with the household chores and by assisting her in the stove production process. Her wider family are helping too, as Khadija\u2019s brother-in-law explains: \u201cAt first, I thought she was just playing around. But later, I began to see the benefits.
