In comparison with other countries where the EnDev programme is implemented, Peru has a relatively high rate of electrification of around 80% at national level. In rural areas, however, only about 60% of the population live in electrified areas; over 4 million people have no access to electricity. Biomass is the predominant source of energy used for cooking in rural areas. The majority of rural Peruvian homes use firewood for cooking, generally in traditional three-stone hearths. Due to the cold and windy climate of the Andes, women generally cook in rooms with small windows and hardly any ventilation.

EnDev Peru promotes access to energy for lighting in rural and semi-rural areas in different forms. On the one hand, EnDev facilitates electrical connections, making now that the beneficiaries themselves finance their facilities and the monthly electricity costs. EnDev also promotes the market for solar home systems and picoPV products. Structures are expected to develop the marketing of photovoltaic systems in view of the sustainability of their uses.
EnDev Peru promotes access to improved, low emission cookstoves. To achieve this, EnDev offers technical assistance to governments, private companies and non-government organizations. EnDev works along the value chain with suppliers, technicians and stove installers. Stoves must be used and maintained well. Another focus of EnDev's word are therefore awareness raising programmes for good usage and maintenance.
EnDev Peru also supports access to solar water heaters. EnDev offers technical assistance to governments and private companies working on solar heaters and solar dryers. It also facilitates coordination and follow up on the micro-financing strategy of solar water heaters with microfinance institutions.
Finally, EnDev Peru promotes access to energy for productive uses. Here, EnDev facilitates access to collective usage technologies for small farmers from producers' associations. En Dev offers technical assistance in order to advise on the improved technology, on the existing suppliers and on the economic benefits for their productive activities. EnDev also promotes access to Agroideas, a government program that provides grants to improve the productivity of farmers' associations.
Impacts in energy to illuminate:
- Economic saving: the average monthly expense in batteries, oil or candles was of 35 new soles, whilst this was reduced to an average of 16 new soles as from having an electric connections or Pico PV.
- Improvement in life quality and conditions: since they have had light, the homes have increased nocturnal activities, in doing homework with the children and in housework tasks. The technology is more reliable, now they can manage situations without any risk of burns or fires. Likewise, the sensation of safety in the streets has increased.
- Decrease of indoor pollution: families are no longer exposed to smoke and soot from candles and oil lamp wicks, because the electric connections and the PV Peaks are clean technologies.
Impacts in energy to cook with:
- Economic saving: on the whole, families that have improved cookstoves spend between 7 and 12 soles; with traditional stoves spend more, between 23 to 26 soles monthly.
- Decrease of emissions inside the room: families perceive a reduction in coughs and bronchial infections and in eye infections. This data is complemented with laboratory tests carried out by SENCICO which mention that improved cookstoves reduce on average, 96,90% of CO and 96,98% of PM2.5.
- Reduction in deforestation: in the traditional stoves, average wood consumption is of 10 kg per day, whilst the improved cookstoves consume 5 kg, achieving an efficiency of 50%.
Impacts in energy for productive uses:
- Income generation and economic saving: the producers who were consulted said that there exists an increase in economic income since the new technology has been used. Furthermore, they mention that the usage of the technology has let them save costs in their production, and improve the products for sale. Given the benefits of the new technology for production, they say that they would be prepared to assume the total cost in order to purchase a new technology or repair it in case the current one fails.
